surgeryObesity has become a serious public health problem worldwide, in our country’s national health survey 2008 showed that since childhood figures are showing up overweight and obesity. According to Body Mass Index (BMI), 26% of children and one in 3 adolescents are overweight (combination of overweight and obesity). In people over age 20, prevalence has increased dramatically, it is reported that 71.9% of women and 66.7% of Mexican men are overweight.

These data are important because high BMI is associated directly with the presence of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, lipid disorders, among others, if we calculate the number of patients with obesity, and more specifically with diabetes is unclear that health systems will be insufficient for your attention.

This has led to the questioning of the economic benefit and health of obesity surgery.

A study at Monash University in Australia, published in the journal Diabetes Care, estimated the economic benefits of obesity surgery, showed that treatment of DM of a single case in a period of 2 years with conventional medical therapy, was 16,600 dollars more expensive than treatment with surgery.

Specifically, this study suggests that after 10 years it has recovered 100% investment of surgical treatment to reduce health care costs.

These results should be a red alert to all medical people to understand the importance of surgical treatment of obesity.
