The liver is the largest organ of the human body and also the only one whose cells are able to regenerate itself. An acute inflammation of the liver occurs suddenly and subsides after a few weeks or months. These do not necessarily experience discomfort. Chronic hepatitis lasts for six months and at worst can lead to cirrhosis, in which shrinks and hardens the tissue, so that the liver cells lose their function.
